Why You'll Love My Recipe

My delicious vegan chicken broth recipe takes just mere minutes to make, dissolves instantly, and tastes so much like real chicken broth that your friends and family won't believe it's vegan!

The stars of this easy recipe are nutritional yeast and a little poultry seasoning. Together, they allow you to make chicken broth vegan with incredible flavor that tastes like the real deal.

This is truly the best vegan chicken broth recipe and the perfect substitute for your favorite dishes. Trust me, once you try my vegan bouillon powder, you'll want to have a jar on hand at all times. It makes everything taste better and can be used in soups or stews and as a seasoning mix in plant-based cooking.

Not to mention, you don't need any fancy ingredients, and making your own vegan broth saves money. Plus, making your own vegan chicken broth substitute means it's free of any preservatives, which makes it healthier than store-bought versions of fake chicken broth.

Kim's Tips For Success

To make sure your vegan chicken broth seasoning turns out flavorful and balanced every time, here are a few simple tips that make all the difference.

  • Adjust the salt: Poultry seasoning blends vary, and some include salt. If yours does, you'll want to reduce the added salt so the mix doesn't end up with too much salt.
  • Taste before storing: Taste a small pinch of the mix. If you want a stronger chicken flavor, add a bit more poultry seasoning, garlic, or onion powder until it's just right.
  • Use a dry spoon: Always use a completely dry spoon when scooping the mix. Even a little moisture can cause clumping and shorten the shelf life.
  • Add some richness: When you're making a cup of my no chicken broth recipe, whisk in a teaspoon of olive oil or vegan butter for extra body and richness.

Ingredients

Made with easy to find pantry staples, you likely have everything you need already on hand to make my DIY version. If you don't, you can find them at most grocery stores.

  • Nutritional yeast: This is the umami base that gives the vegetable broth some depth. Any kind will work, but I like to use nutritional yeast that isn't fortified for a cleaner flavor. It's important not to confuse it with brewer's yeast.
  • Fine sea salt: Brings out the flavor. Feel free to use less salt. You could also use celery salt if you prefer.
  • Poultry seasoning: This seasoning is what gives the broth its chicken base. Most blends are made with common herbs like thyme, sage, rosemary, and marjoram. It contains no animal products.
  • Onion and garlic powder: These two seasonings round out the broth's flavor and give it a little more depth.
  • Turmeric: This ingredient is optional, but it gives the vegan chicken stock recipe a golden color and a mild earthy note.
  • Sugar: Feel free to omit the sugar, but I like to use a pinch to smooth out the salt and develop the chicken taste of the spice mix.
  • Black pepper: Adds some warmth to finish the broth. You can use white pepper if you prefer or even a pinch of cayenne pepper.

👩‍🍳 Pro Tip: Use my homemade poultry seasoning recipe for the most incredible chicken-like flavor.

How to Use Vegan Chicken Broth

  • For broth: Whisk one tablespoon of the powder into one cup of hot water until it's fully dissolved. It works great in vegan chicken noodle soup with soy curls or vegetable stews.
  • For grains: Add one tablespoon per two cups of water when cooking rice, quinoa, or couscous. Vegetable stock is an easy way to add some delicious flavor.
  • As a seasoning: Sprinkle it on tofu, roasted vegetables, or potatoes before baking. If you want to use it as a vegan chicken seasoning recipe, I like to use it with smoked paprika to create a comforting smoky flavor.
  • In sauces or gravies: Stir a tiny pinch into creamy sauces, vegan gravies, or casseroles for some classic rich flavor.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I store the broth powder?

I like to store it in an airtight container or sealed jar in a cool, dry place. It will keep for up to three months. You can also freeze it, and it will keep for a long time.

Can I make the broth without nutritional yeast?

You can, but it won't have the same texture or savory richness as my original recipe. Nutritional yeast has a nutty cheese-like flavor that creates an umami "brothy" flavor. You could try using mushroom powder as a substitute.

Is poultry seasoning vegan?

Yes! Despite its name and the fact that it's typically used for cooking chicken or meat products, poultry seasoning is just a blend of simple herbs. It's just a mixture of ground thyme, sage, rosemary, marjoram, black pepper, and sometimes celery seed or salt. All spices you likely have in your spice cabinet.

Can I make the broth low sodium?

Yes! Just reduce or omit the salt altogether to make a salt-free version. You can always add salt as needed when using it in your favorite recipes.
