  • Sweetener (Optional) - Maple syrup, agave, dates, or a few drops of vanilla extract can enhance the flavor.
  • Salt (Optional) - A pinch of salt helps balance and enhance the taste.

How To Make Almond Milk

Whether you're lactose intolerant, follow a vegan diet, or simply enjoy homemade alternatives, my easy recipe will show you how to make creamy, nutritious almond milk in just a few steps.

  1. Soak the Almonds - Before you begin, you need to soften one cup raw almonds by placing them in a large bowl and covering them with water. Then let them soak overnight (or for at least 8 hours) to soften.
  2. Drain & Rinse - Once the nuts are soft, drain the soaking water and rinse the almonds thoroughly.
  3. Blend - In a high speed blender, combine the almonds with 4 cups filtered water and blend until smooth for about 1 to 2 minutes. I find my Vitamix works best.
  4. Strain - Pour the blended mixture through a fine mesh sieve, nut milk bag, or cheesecloth into a bowl, squeezing out as much liquid as possible.
  5. Flavor & Sweeten (Optional) - Add vanilla, sweetener, or a pinch of salt, then blend again briefly.
  6. Store & Enjoy - Pour your homemade almond milk into a clean glass jar with an airtight lid and refrigerate for up to 5 days. You can also freeze it for up to 3 months.

✔️ Note: If making the almond milk recipe with dates, just blend the Medjool dates with the filtered water and almonds.

Now, you're probably wondering, how long does homemade almond milk last? Since homemade almond milk lacks preservatives, it typically lasts 4-5 days before spoiling. If you notice a sour smell, curdling, or an off taste, it's best to discard it.

To extend its shelf life, you can also freeze your almond milk in an ice cube tray and store the frozen cubes in a sealed bag. This method is perfect for smoothies or recipes.

And don't forget to always shake it well before use! Natural separation occurs over time.

Ingredients
 

  • 1 cup raw almonds
  • 4 cups filtered water (plus more for soaking)
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup or 1-2 Medjool dates (optional)
  • ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract (optional)
  • A pinch of salt (optional)

Instructions

  • Place the raw almonds in a bowl and cover with water. Soak overnight (or at least 8 hours) to soften.
  • Drain the soaking water and rinse the almonds thoroughly.
  • In a high-speed blender, combine the soaked almonds with 4 cups of fresh filtered water. If using dates add them too. Then blend for about 1 to 2 minutes until smooth.
